SEEDS AND CLONES

Tree breeding from seeds and clones

Pan-American Woods, the leader in sustainable Teak harvesting in Central America, is offering high-quality tree seeds and clones selected by hand from our valued plantations. Our vast, mature plantations are an ideal source of quality genetic material for new plantations.

It’s the trees!

Seeds:

Planting the seedlings of high quality parent trees is an important step in the right direction to ensure good quality plantations. Pan-American Woods has over 300 hectares of seed producing orchards certified by the National Seed Office of Costa Rica, three times more are than any other producer in the country, while meanwhile these areas have the lowest tree densities of all, just over 150 tree per hectare, with only the largest, and very best formed trees left as seeders.

Our pricing is another compelling factor. As well as having Costa Rica’s best Teak seeds, Pan-American Woods is the largest producer of them, resulting in competitive pricing based on a lower cost structure.

Clones

Vegetative propagation is a way of raising planting stock not involving seeds but rather  cuttings of the very best plus trees available. These cuttings contain precisely the same genes as the selected parent tree instead to the seeds which genes come from 2 parent trees.

Pan-American Woods has a well advanced, and internationally recognized clonal propagation and tree improvement program which main aim is to produce copies of the very best trees available which are used as planting stock for the second generation and which are now available for sale to the public.

Of the 3 million trees that were originally planted in the PanAmerican Woods Plantation estate only sixty were selected for clonal propagation this means a very strict selection ratio of 1:50.000. at the time of selection the mature plus trees were at least 14 years old which is important as time is the only way to differentiate good looking trees with good potential from the really superior trees.

Experience aids cloning techniques

It certainly helps to have 20 years of experience in harvesting and marketing Teak wood products around the world! Pan-American Woods has excellent knowledge of market preferences, having exported over 5,000 containers of teak logs to date. While other producers may focus almost exclusively on tree characteristics such as branch formation and size, our criteria include wood characteristics such as color, density, straight grain and low knot density. A perfectly formed tree with 40 centimeters or more in diameter at breast height of wood of desirable quality at this age is deemed suitable for clonal propagation.
